Sometimes there is just that combination of the familiar with the new that makes a dish exceptional. Devon Café has garnered much praise for their innovative take on traditional brunch dishes. Zacharay Tan, Devon Café’s head chef calls upon his Penang (Malaysian) roots and Bistro Guillaume training to develop a quirky (and utterly delicious) Asian fusion menu.
BL and I have been for dinner at Devon on Danks, and finally made it to their original outlet in Surry Hills for breakfast. This unassuming café sits alongside other eateries on Devonshire St mere minutes from Central train station. The service is efficient, and attentive.
I loved the simple and well-designed layout. All beechwood timber and the matt red coffee cups are aesthetically lovely and great to cradle in your hands. The barista made an excellent brew, good flavour and slight acidity.
BL chose Breakfast with the Sakumas which consisted of a miso grilled king salmon, smoked eel croquette, 63°C egg, radish petit salad and kewpi mayonnaise ($25). There is also a sprinkling of sushi rice mix over the dish, with the umami notes provided by the seasoned seaweed and sesame seed. This is a substantial piece of salmon, but the dish is light. The salad is also beautifully seasoned, not oily. I dislike very runny yolk but BL loves them, so for him, this dish just about reached perfection. The smoked eel croquette is ridiculously savoury, I would be happy eating half a dozen of them.
I had the eggs blini, buckwheat blini with cured king salmon, salmon caviar, brocollini, sauce Mikado and poached eggs. I loved this dish, the poached eggs were exactly how I like them, just a slight ooze of the yolk and the hollandaise sauce was just the right balance of tang and richness. The slight nutty buckwheat flavour complements the silky king salmon.
There is also a range of cabinet food, ranging from sandwiches to muffins to slices, if you’re in a hurry.
The food at Devon Café is simply stunning, and it’s no wonder this place makes the top cafés list every year since it opened. Put this on your must-visit list the next time you’re in Sydney.
