Qin Xiang Ge Noodle House, Mt Albert, Auckland

Qin Xiang Ge Noodle House is a small eatery within the Lims Supermarket Centre on New North Road. I’ve walked past this place several times on the way to the supermarket, and had never so much as glanced at it unfortunately. A colleague from Xi’an suggested we visit and said the food here reminds him of home (even though he claims Qin Xiang Ge’s versions are not as spicy).

Qin Xiang Ge has a tightly edited menu, with a specials menu only in Chinese. Diners visit for their famous handmade noodles, which are prepared in simple soups or dressed with sour and spicy flavours. This is a busy eatery, with tables quickly snapped up during the lunch hour.

We started with a cumin lamb burger ($5), stewed spicy shredded lamb in toasted unleavened bread. This was a good teaser to the rest of the meal.

The steamed cold rice noodles ($8, or with beef $9.50) was a taste sensation. The noodles were tossed with shredded cucumber, tofu, bean sprouts, pieces of beef, and a tangy chilli sauce. Simple and delicious.

We also had the saucy beef (thin) noodles ($10). The ingredients are piled up over the beef, with a dollop of hot sauce. Toss the noodles well to coat with the sauce. I really liked the crunch from the various vegetables and the wood-ear fungus .

The spicy and sour pork noodles soup ($9) was more sour than spicy. It had a lot of interest with the different bits of vegetables.

Noodles with beef in soup ($9) is a popular dish; I saw several diners enjoying this. After the spicy dishes, this seemed bland.

There is also tofu fa (soybean custard) on the menu, served sweet or spicy. Unfortunately, they had run out when we visited. I have never had tofu fa with a spicy sauce; I was told the spicy version is common in north & west China. Intriguing! There is also black rice pudding available.

Dishes are $8 – $11 and are truly massive. We weren’t able to finish our dishes, but we gave it a good shot. I was impressed how much flavour they managed to get out of simple ingredients. Qin Xiang Ge Noodle House may have a small menu, but they do it well and they do it with care.

I am almost always in the mood for noodle soup, but never get it if I'm sharing dishes. This all looks like very good filling and comforting food. I don't think I've ever had tofu fa spicy before either. Very interesting! I wonder if it's just a tingle or quite pronounced?

Looks great. I've walked past many times and wondered what this place was like too. And ditto about the spicy tofu fa – I've never heard of it before. I wonder if it is sweet as well as spicy?
