One brilliant aspect of the Auckland dining scene are Taiwanese teahouses. They are springing up all over the place, and I am getting completely hooked. J’s Tea (919 Dominion Rd, Mt Roskill, 09-550 7775) is a funky interpretation.
J’s Tea provides helpful guides to the uninitiated by providing ‘Top 10” list of drinks and snacks on the tables, and even a guide on how to request sweetness levels of drinks. Be warned, these drinks are HUGE. From left, red bean slushy, J’s Cantonese coffee milk tea and rockmelon milk tea ($6.50 each). The red bean slushy would be more aptly termed an iced dessert, – it was thick and has a great red bean flavor.
We had the Taiwanese style popcorn chicken, – how can you not like morsels of deep-fried succulent chicken?
Platter of stewed meats (2 choices for $8, 3 for $10 and 4 for $12) is great value. We picked beef, chicken gizzard and tofu.
Deep-fried man tou (bread) with condensed milk is one of those foods you know is bad for you, but you can’t stop yourself.
We also had one of their meal dishes, – pork with rice, – this came with steamed broccoli, braised egg, tofu and preserved vegetables.
Overall, this place is excellent value. The dishes are scrumptious and the portions are really generous. Best to visit with a group of people so you can sample a variety.
